How many people have actually built a university from scratch?

Mat Jacobson says that, even after spending his life in higher education, he has met only two others who have done it. When establishing a private university in Australia proved almost impossible, he moved to America and built Kennedy University of Leadership.

In Part Two of our conversation with Mat, Professor Fahim Khondaker joins Magnus and Don to ask what a university should do for the people who place their future in it.

The discussion moves through student outcomes, practical learning, regulation, research and the role of a degree. Then it becomes personal.

Mat shares stories of students who had failed elsewhere before finding a way through. Fahim describes going from a four-classroom school with no flushing toilets to one of South Africa's most resourced schools. Don reflects on growing up around the divide between rich and poor and why he still believes education is the great equaliser.

The group also discusses assessment in the age of AI, Dūcere Foundation's education work across Africa, African children publishing stories from their own communities and the difference between charity that creates recognition and work that creates independence.

At its heart, this episode is about giving people a real chance to change what is possible in their lives.
